But, as I have said, it is not an especially plausible or appealing doctrine. In both of the above respects – what he is arguing for and what he is arguing against – Nozick moves beyond the use that Rawls makes of his argument. What they have in common is the Rawlsian diagnosis of the grounds of the powerful initial plausibility of utilitarianism, that it rests upon the underlying plausibility of applying individual rationality to social choice.
